No one knows why Mr. Bush teared up. We can hope that it was an apprehension of the web of suffering represented by this occasion. But it is scurrilous and irresponsible of you to characterize the Congress' effort to put an end, or at least a limit, to this ill-conceived, mismanaged and wasteful war as in any way dishonoring Corporal Dunham. The dishonor is in wasting more good lives after it has come clear that this war is not in the interests of America or Iraq or the Middle East, just to postpone the admission that this was a mistake. Talking about winning this war is like talking about reaching your destination by refusing to admit the wrong turn taken long ago, and asserting that, if only you follow this road long enough, it will lead you to where you want to go. The Democratic Congress has an opportunity to admit the wrong turn and put us on a new course toward being a more mature and responsible nation. Doing that would honor the Corporal more than the medal or Mr. Bush's belated tears ever will.
