Reader comment on: How the West Could Lose

Submitted by Scott Baker, Dec 27, 2006 02:31

I agree wit Mr. Pipes as far as it goes, but there is another, potentially even greater reason why the West may lose. The Western world follows a resource-heavy, individual-valuing model, while the Islamic world values ascetisim (at least in the Jihadist trenches) and the individual is devalued to the point where he is literally little more than a walking bomb, more valuable dead than alive - witness the renumerations made to the families of suicide bombers. It's a recognized fact that the planet cannot support everyone living like the average American or even European. So far, the response has been for the West to be the Haves and the Middle East largely the have-nots, but that may be changing due to demographic realities. Perhaps evolution - both cultural and biological - is producing a new type of human that breeds frequently, cares little about each offspring and invests few resource in them (or has any to invest), but in the end wins out through sheer numbers and low use of resources per person. A culture has to be neither fair nor just to survive, it just has to be the most fit.
