An excellent review: Mr. Kirsch has put trash in its proper place. The notion, however, that Allied bombing of Germany had no appreciable effect in shortening the European war (perhaps an extension of the conclusion reached by the post war strategic bombing surveys, that the bombing campaign reduced Nazi Germany's war-making capacity by a near negligible proportion) is a mistake. The British and American bombing offensives forced Germany to switch huge resources - in pilots, training, planes, plane development and building, fuel, etc - to home air defence, and weakened the Luftwaffe as the ground support air arm on the Eastern Front. From early 1943 onward the Red Army air force was able to establish air superiority, then supremacy, in its theater of war, while the western Allies did the same against the Luftwaffe in theirs. Allied air supremacy over Europe, won at great cost, did shorten the war.
