Reader comment on: Reopening Pinter's Old Wounds

Submitted by Tom Murphy, Mar 8, 2008 20:56

Saw the play today, March 8. My first Pinter. I liked Grode's the best of all the reviews; it covered the most ground for me.

What struck me, finishing all the reviews, is how unreachable any conclusion about the work apparently is to everyone. I imagine Pinter would be pleased, and while I appreciate that to some extent, I still find it a little unsatisfying that more cannot be pinned down about this work. It is as if the amorality that is at the base of the action is also at the base of Pinter's view; that amorality and amgibuity are necessary and sufficient to oneanother. And indeed, I think they are. But I also think that to be a great work of art, the work must transend the subject.

I will now go on to read the comments of others with great anticipation.
