Besides the oft quoted rationale of 'opening new markets' abroad (with all the dubiety that it sometimes involved) was there not another element that impelled European/American imperialism, namely, the religious one of evangelization and proselytization which sought, in this case, to disseminate Christianity together with all the perceived benefits of Western science and technology that would accrue to, what were thought to be, the benighted countries of Africa, Asia and so on?
