Little gifts or big
Reader comment on: Why Giving Makes You Happy

Submitted by Ken Emmond, Jan 2, 2008 21:16

Various surveys of happiness have shown that Mexicans, for all of their problems, are among the happiest people on earth. Mexico has many beggars. Maybe the fact that people even of modest means give to the unfortunates on the street (who are among the least likely to be included in a poll), frequently if not dramatically, contributes significantly to their happiness. At least two cheers for noblesse oblige!

At the other end of the spectrum, the theory that relates giving to happiness should mean that Bill Gates and Warren Buffet must be among the happiest people on earth, if there is a correlation between the size of the gift and the happiness derived therefrom.
