As a High School special education teacher I was shocked to read this article. For several years, I have had the responsibility to submit the applications for extended time to the SAT people. Not only do you have to prove in the IEP the student uses extended time but you must also have recent data backing it up. A parent's diagnosis is certainly not enough. Usely, data from a certified school pyschologist is required. I have had several students rejected when they have requested extra time. The SAT people do NOT take this lightly. It is NOT easy to receive accommodations on the SAT.
Extended time does not give an unfair advantage to students with learning disabilities. It levels the playing field. If a student does not know an answer no amount of time will correct that.
I am disappointed the author of this article did not do more research to refute the complaints of a teenager.
