Barbara questioned the idea of overdiagnosing. I'm sure that in some cases this is true. Since you asked the question about my family, the gifted child is the youngest who is a straight "A" student and aces all of the state mandated tests he has taken since 3rd grade. He is now in high school and continues to struggle with staying focused in his advanced placement classes, if he doesn't take his medication. His dyslexia is very slight and its effect is seen in spelling and writing. My other two children who are 10 years older struggled through public school because of the lack of knowledge on my part as well as the school. They have both graduated now from college with 3.4 GPA's and are working on their master's degrees. Both of them work very hard and are very persistant in all academic work as well as other things. They never had the accommadation of extra time on tests. More information than you won't to know I'm sure, but it is possible that these things can happen, especially when reading and writing difficulties come from both sides of the family.

I realize that things in life must be done in a timely fashion but very often public school teachers tend to equate speed with intelligence. The work place is much more accommodating for disablities than schools. People learn over time how to accommodate for themselves without anyone being aware of it. Some of us have to work a little harder and longer to get it right .
