Indoctrination was part of the educational system in this country from the beginning. It's simply that in recent years the indoctrination has not been from an orthodox Protestant Christian vantage point. Even when I was in public school in the 1950's and 1960's the texts still reflected a Protestant vantage point as far as history was concerned (and my parents being Protestant had no complaints about that). Our view of economics was steeped in a Calvinist perspective. Now that indoctrination comes from a secular viewpoint that is not even consistent within itself. Consequently parents who still hold to Protestant Christianity in its more orthodox forms (I'm not thinking of UCC or Episcopalians here) are apt to feel disenfranchised. It's far easier to see the indoctrination when you are on the outside looking in rather than when you are part of the culture which is shaping the indoctrination. The charter school movement has opened up a whole new set of issues. In NYC you have a high school for self-identified gay students. I assume that the history taught in that school will include "gay" history. So how is it unusual that an Arabic school would be looking at history from an Arabic perspective? I'm not sure how one manages to encourage multi-culturalism and mutual understanding by creating a separate school for Arabic speakers, but I do understand why the parents of Arabic speaking children might feel their children would be less discriminated against and more comfortable in that sort of setting. How is it so different to have this school than to have the Harvey Milk school?
