I am not sure whether it is proper to compare populations of "uncertified" teachers with traditionally certified teachers who enter teaching through the "conventional" route, right out of college. I believe these are very different populations. I will say this much from personal experience, as an individual whose 6 years in secondary education (as a social studies teacher) proved to be a hiatus from higher education where I have subsequently returned: while it is true that I learned much "on the job" when I entered the high school classroom at the age of 37, it would be wrong to assume that the success of "uncertified" teachers betrays a trend. There are many valuable lessons to learn about teaching and classroom management that can be provided by a good certification program. That some people can enter the classroom with minimal preparation in classroom management is, in my estimate, the exception to the rule: prospective teachers need to be prepared for all aspects of their profession, both in terms of content knowledge, instructional strategies and classroom management.
