An article that is published online and made available for comments does not a blog make. The distinction isn't just whether or not there exists a print version of the same content. I think most people on any side of this debate can more or less agree what a blog is, as distinguished from other online content, even if we only have "I know it when I see it" style definitions. To begin with, the "log" part suggests ongoing, occasional content, generally posted without the aid of a second party editor. Length and structure of posts tends to vary widely, from a thousand words plus of sustained argument to unadorned links to other sites, to photos to videos.
When Powell's posts an essay by James Wood on its "review a day" site, that isn't James Wood blogging. When the Sun posts an Adam Kirsch essay and makes it available for comment, that isn't a blog, either. There are a lot of good cases to be made on both sides of this argument, so there's no need to muddy the semantic water when we all know the kind of sites to which Kirsch is refering.
Note: Comments are screened, and in some cases edited, before posting. We reserve the right to reject anything we find objectionable.
