Human Life DOES Have Value
Reader comment on: The Politics of News

Submitted by John Simpson, May 22, 2007 08:32

Is this really something new? I remember not long ago in Brooklyn when four white girls were attacked by a gang of 30 "rowdy youths." Not only did the newspapers go out of their way not to report on it, the local authorities went out of their way to declare it NOT a hate crime, despite the fact that racial epithets were hurled during the assaults. So now we know, as far as the press is concerned, which human lives have value and which do not. If you are gay, lesbian, or a minority who suffers a terrible crime you are front page news. The rest of us just go quietly to the hospital or the morgue, soon to be forgotten, if we are brutalized or murdered by "un-newsworthy" killers. What an absolute disgrace. How can they look themselves in the mirrors and call themselves journalists? Not that is matters, or is even relevant. There are bigger issues at stake here besides objective journalism. Right? BTW are any of these five "un-newsworthy" killers in Knoxville being charged with a hate crime? Not that it matters, mind you. As the writer here stated, how could hate possibly be involved when you are among the oppressed?
