I live in the East Village and have had the good fortune of freqenting the 2nd Ave Deli on many occasions - and I'm not Jewish either! I loved the history of it, the busy lines around Hannukah and Passover and the waitstaff who had been there for ages.... The food was great but the history was also just as important.! It was "classic New York" at it's finest. I could not BELIEVE the real estate transaction that occurred with the implementation of the new lease - asking for that astronomical amount each month - more than $10,000 than what they had already been paying.... It was insane. What kind of a person does that to a family-run landmark?? How can they sleep at night?? It makes me literally sick to my stomach now when I see the CHASE logo where the 2nd Ave Deli logo used to be, it's like a slap in the face. I wish there had been some way of stopping that ruthless coldhearted person/corporation but sadly - that's what New York is turning into. Ruthless money-makers with no soul.
I wish the family all the best in the new location and hope that they do well there. And I hope the young lawyer gets them back on top!
