I was born and raised in Manhattan, and my family moved to St. Marks Place (just 2 blocks from the 2nd Ave Deli) in 1967, when is was still just a very small counter-only with a few tables on the windowed wall overlooking 10th Street. It was literally a hole in the wall.....not unlike Paragon Sporting Goods...when it opened in this city, it was tiny .....look at it now!
Personally, if they add a bar, I have no problem with it. If they aren't Kosher, I could care less. I WANT MY 2ND AVENUE DELI BACK, and I am will to take it in ANY form it comes in ....there IS no other Matzah Ball soup like the soup served by the 2nd Avenue Deli (sorry, Fred-- owner of KATZ DELI--it's just not as good!).....the chicken, the burgers, the tuna salad.....everything was wonderful.
Those of you who long for the Deli being EXACTLY as it was should realize that you should be GRATEFUL that it is coming back at all.
With a full service bar, the cash flow for the Deli would remain high.
Abe was a great guy-- although it always makes me the saddest to think that two weeks before he was murdered, he didn't eat his favorite (pastrami), because he was at a fat farm....he comes home, only to face bullets on East 4th Street inside his van as he conducted his daily banking.
Hope your with God now Abe, and you're makin' Him, your devine Matzah Ball soup. YUM-0!!
Kosher or not, BRING IT BACK.....THE CITY MISSES YOU!!
John
