Libertarian Party Claims Mike Gravel

By Staff Reporter of the Sun | March 26, 2008

A former senator of Alaska who is mounting a long-shot bid for the presidency, Mike Gravel, has joined the Libertarian Party, a party official said last night.

"I'm joining the Libertarian Party because it is a party that combines a commitment to freedom and peace that can't be found in the two major parties that control the government and politics of America," Mr. Gravel said, according to a release from the party.

The party's executive director, Shane Cory, said Mr. Gravel, who ran in Democratic Party primaries this year, signed a Libertarian membership card in Washington yesterday.

A spokesman for Mr. Gravel's campaign said he recently spoke of wanting to be the candidate of choice for a number of small parties, including the Greens and the Libertarians. The candidate did not immediately respond to an email inquiry last night. He now lives in Virginia, which does not register voters by party.
